Island hopping by boat and mountain bike
MTB cruise Southern Dalmatia - Itinerary
MTB cruise Southern Dalmatia - approx. 275 km (170 mi.) / 5220 metres elevation by MTB
This trip is a mountain bike variant of our classical „Southern Route". No off road route or island will be left untouched by the tour. Discover, by traversing mostly deserted pathways, the sparsely populated region of Dalmatia. The tour by bike and boat, which will take us to Brac Island with its impressive stone relieves, to the wineries of Pelješac Peninsula, to the green Mjiet and Korcula islands, as well as to the lavender island of Hvar, will give us an opportunity to get to know the rich variety of this region in an active way. You will fall in love with the fully restored wooden yacht and with the comfort and excellent catering it provides during your one-week stay in one of the cozy cabins. This tour will be accomplished on the same boat as our classical "Southern Route" and one tour guide will attend the mountain bikers and the other one the cyclists who have opted for trekking bikes.
1st day (Sat) Split - Omis (approx. 17 km/11 mi. - 250 metres elevation by MTB)

2nd day (Sun) Cetina Canyon (approx. 46 km/29 mi. - 700 metres elevation by MTB)

3rd (Mon) Brac Island (approx. 51 km/32 mi. - 1000 metres elevation by MTB)

4th day (Tues) Mljet and Pelješac (26 + 25 km/16 + 15 mi. - 1000 metres elevation by MTB)

Early in the morning we cross over to the green, wooded island of Mljet, which is also known as the honey island. In the 12th century Benedictine monks founded a beautifully situated monastery which we can see on our short bike trip. The local pine forest is one of the most beautiful of its kind in the entire Mediterranean region – Ulysses is said to have spent 7 years here. Today this region is a national park and one of the highlights of every Dalmatian journey. At noon the ship takes us to Pelješac. Pelješac impresses visitors even from afar with its Sv. Ilja Mountain which rises almost 1000 meters from the sea. In the afternoon we take a bike tour from Trstenik past the most famous wine growing region of Dalmatia (the excellent Plavac und Dingač wines come from here) to Orebić.
After arrival we cross to Korčula Island, whose capital town vies with Venice for the title of the birth place of Marco Polo. There is enough time for us for an extensive stroll through the alleys of this beautiful town.
5th day (Wed) Korcula Island (approx. 65 km / 40 mi. - 1100 metres elevation by MTB)

The peacefulness and remoteness of luscious gardens with large cypresses dominate the appearance of perhaps the most beautiful Dalmatian island. Today’s bike route is physical demanding and leads us first sometimes on asphalted and sometimes on unpaved roads with fantastic panoramic views to Brna which is located in the southwestern part of the island. There we’ll have time to enjoy our packed lunch and to swim. Later on we reach the village of Blato which, like Rome, was built on 7 hills and finally we arrive in Vela Luka.
6th day (Thurs) Hvar Island (approx. 27 + 25 km / 17 + 15 mi. - 800 metres elevation by MTB)

After arriving in Hvar we take an interesting tour around the town, across the large Renaissance square which is lined with the cathedral and many late gothic palaces. Today’s first cycle route leads us on unpaved roads up to the pass and using a technical challenging downhill to Stari Grad. The destinations for the afternoon tour are the harbors of Jelsa and Vrboska which invite us to have an extended break or we explore the villages in the center of the island on secret gravel roads. Afterwards we return to Stari Grad which has become a Mecca for artists and art lovers in the past few years.
7th day (Fri) Solta Island (approx. 19 km / 12 mi. - 350 metres elevation by MTB)

8th day (Sat) Disembarkment

Disembarkment until 9 am and individual departure or extended stay in Croatia.
Changes
We reserve the right to make changes to the planned route due to changing wind and weather conditions, and where required by organizational necessities.
Requirements (level 2-3)
The bike-tours require a basic level of fitness from participants, which they should have acquired from steady cycling. The tours will take us up to a height of between 200 and 500 m above sea-level. The day-tours from 20 to 60 km will take us through hilly and mountainous terrain and will be completed without any time-constraints. Participants will also need to master long and steep climbs, during which they are, however, also permitted to push their bikes. The downhills are partly challenging and adequate technical skills are assumed.
You are free to set aside a half or full day to swim or spend on board the boat, instead of taking a planned bike-tour. We will traverse asphalted roads, which are rarely traveled on outside the holiday seasons, as well as unpaved roads and single trails. Each day you can either decide to bike alone, using the information and maps provided, or join the two tour guides or other participants.
Bike helmets are required on all bike rides. Bike helmets are available on board in limited number (reservation requested).
Bringing children
We believe that only children in a good physical condition and of a minimum age of 10 and previous bicycle tour experience are able to master the bike-tours on their own strength. Please note that the minimum height for a rental bike is 1,40 m (4.6 ft.)
Catering
The cook on board is a member of the crew and prepares the breakfast and two warm meals a day. The full board starts with the lunch on the arrival day and ends with the breakfast on the departure day.

Minimum: 16 participants
Maximum: 30 participants
